Diamond Buying Guide

In this guide, we share clear and friendly advice to help you confidently select a diamond that reflects your personality and meets your expectations.

Understand the 4Cs of Diamonds

The 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—are key to understanding diamond quality:

Color: Finding Your Shade

Diamonds are graded on a color scale that follows the alphabet from D to Z. Grade D diamonds are completely colorless and highly prized. As you move down the scale toward Z, diamonds show increasing visible tint. Colorless diamonds fall within grades D to F, while near-colorless diamonds are graded G to H and often offer excellent value without obvious tint.

Clarity: Embracing Imperfections

Almost all diamonds have natural inclusions. Clarity grades measure how visible these inclusions are. Selecting a diamond graded VS1 to SI1 typically means imperfections aren’t visible to the naked eye but offer great value.

Cut grades from Excellent to Poor showing how diamond cut affects sparkle. Studio ALOI recommends Excellent or Very Good for brilliance.

Cut: Bringing Out the Sparkle

The cut of a diamond determines how brilliantly it reflects light. A well-cut diamond catches the eye and dazzles with sparkle and fire. Aim for an "Excellent" or "Very Good" cut to ensure maximum brilliance.

Diamond sizes from 0.25 to 5 carats. Studio ALOI tip: choosing just under key weights (like 0.95 ct) offers better value with similar look.

Carat: Size and Value

Carat weight indicates a diamond’s size. Keep in mind that diamonds slightly below popular carat weights (like 0.95 ct instead of 1 ct) can provide significant savings without a noticeable difference in appearance.

Diamond Fluorescence: Hidden Value in the Glow

Diamond fluorescence is a gentle glow some diamonds emit under ultraviolet (UV) rays, usually appearing blue. Around a third of diamonds exhibit some fluorescence, but noticeable intensity is less common. Bluish fluorescence can enhance lower color grades (I–M), making faintly yellow diamonds appear whiter in daylight, sometimes increasing their value. In higher grades (D–H), strong fluorescence may lower the price due to perceived haziness, although actual clarity impact is rare, providing opportunities for excellent value.

Importance of Certification

Always select diamonds certified by reputable labs such as GIA, IGI, or HRD. Certification ensures authenticity, quality, and peace of mind. Additionally, check the laser inscription on the diamond’s girdle to verify its certification number, which confirms the diamond matches the report and guarantees its traceability.
